The Nationalist is a playable faction in Risk Malaysia. They are made up of Malaysians with different skills, war veterans and highly motivated volunteers who are inspired by the idea of Malaysia is for Malaysians.

Overview

The Nationalist (Parti Nasionalis Malaysia) is a political party formed in the 21st century shortly after the Great Economy Collapse. Its mission is to gather Malaysians to unite and rebuild the nation without foreign intervention from the EU and the Socialist bloc. The party is highly decentralised due to the chaos which ensued the economic crisis but the idea of unifying the states brought people of different backgrounds under a common banner.

The Nationalist focuses on amassing whatever talent they can use to rebuild and defend Malaysia, hence the usage of a variety of units to bolster its standing army. The inclusion of these local know-how and technical knowledge increases the speed of the party members while blending in like normal citizens. Hence, the party's irregulars and unconventional guerrilla tactics are best suited for stealthy and sneaky players.

History
Shortly after U.S. announced that it will default on its debts, a shockwave of economic crises spread all over the world which took its toll on Malaysians. The super-inflated cost of living and devalued Ringgit broke the country's economic strength and societal structure within days. Chaos and anarchy ruled the streets as it was every man for himself.

Several Malaysians came together to form the Nationalist Party amid the chaos to bring a semblance of order back to their beloved country. What started out as a kopitiam group grew to be an influential organisation which promotes the unification of Malaysia by Malaysians. The threats of simple looters escalated to the impending WWIII involving the U.S. and the Socialists as well as the growing influential sphere from EU. These external threats have further motivated party members of all walks of life to join and to repel the foreign invaders.

The Nationalist is a highly decentralised faction due to the aftermath of the economic crisis. As an outsider, it is common to confuse the common rabbles, organised mercenaries or freedom fighters with the actual Nationalists.

With splinter cells and localised resistance groups scattered all over the country, they mutually identify themselves under the Nationalist banner. However, at the helm of the party is the Committee. The Committee consists of 7 Party Advisors who originally founded the organisation and they influence the party supporters and their decision-making. Those who desire to start a Nationalist party branch in their areas will be appointed as Nationalist Generalissimos. From there, the Generalissimos are free to spread the cause without much intervention from the Committee members.

Election
The Nationalist is the only faction in Risk Malaysia which holds election to further strengthen itself. Upon reaching Level 6, Generalissimos can decide to run an election to choose how their branch can expand. The two branches are Ultranationalists and Neo-Nationalists.

Ultranationalists
Extremist supporters of the nationalist ideology. They believe Malaysians, or people who relate themselves to Malaysia, is a cluster of culture and ethnic groups which forms a sovereign nation. If the Ultranationalist Party wins the election, the attack damage of all units are increased as party supporters fight with intense zeal and fanaticism.

Neo-Nationalists
Supporters who embrace globalisation and technology to further advance the Party's cause. They believe Malaysians should actively react and adapt to their ever-changing world to achieve social change. If the Neo-Nationalist Party wins the election, the defense of all units are increased as party supporters become well-coordinated using latest technologies and apps.

Military
The Nationalist armed forces consist of the standard standing army as well as local guerrillas and militias. It is common to see Nationalist infantries and modern armour fighting side by side with local guerrillas. With such diverse types of units, Generalissimos rely on speed, mobility and stealth to overwhelm the superior enemies of the unifying country. Occasionally, terror tactics and sabotage are used to cripple and/or to simply annoy the enemies.

Trivia

  • The Nationalists were supposed to be the 'underdog' faction, but after version 1.3 they got buffed up with more unit abilities and stats boost.
  • The sound of the Civil Uprising was from one of those actual Malaysian protests where many wore yellow.
  • The features which never made it into the final version are:
    • Hacker - An unarmed infantry which hacks the internet for money and disabling enemy operations made exclusively for the Neo-Nationalists, removed due to bugs. The Hacker's attributes and abilities were redistributed among the Neo-Nationalist Generalissimo and Saboteurs.
    • Fanatic - An infantry with the ability to become almost invincible when fanaticised with the point to leave collateral damage made exclusively for the Ultranationalists, removed due to lack of model and sensitivity to current events. However, its attack and abilities were redistributed among the Ultranationalist Generalissimo and Guerrillas.
    • National Uprising - The ultimate ability to provoke a nationalistic uprising in the entire map and causing angry mobs to appear in all settlements, removed due to clear game imbalance. I mean, really, imagine a Nationalist player activating this ability and his enemy counterattack by activating his own National Uprising and we have hundreds of angry mobs with sticks, pitchforks and torches beating up each other all over the place. Hmm, maybe we will see if that will work out smoothly in Risk Malaysia II.
  • They were the most bugged Faction in development, to the point they crashed the game if chosen in version 1.0.1. Among the 3 factions, I've spent the most man hours developing and debugging the Nationalists.
